Pennine Way

The Pennine Way is Britain’s oldest and perhaps most iconic National Trail. Every long-distance walker will no doubt at some stage in their lives have this famous route in their sights. Stretching some 265 miles along the backbone of England and into the Scottish Borders, the Pennine Way passes through three national parks and a vast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as it takes you on a tour of some of the most scenic upland landscapes in the country.

The trail begins in the picturesque village of Edale in the Derbyshire Peak District and winds its way north along the Pennine spine crossing wild and desolate moorlands, through charming dales, over rugged limestone hills, and even on historic Roman roads, finally reaching the Scottish Borders and the town of Kirk Yetholm. The rewards for taking up the challenge of the Pennine Way are plentiful; the sight of the dramatic Kinder Scout plateau, the limestone cliffs of Malham Cove, the awe-inspiring High Force waterfall, the magnificent High Cup Nick, the best preserved stretch of Hadrian’s Wall and the sweeping vistas from the Cheviot Hills to name but a few.

Delightful though they are, don’t think for a moment that the Pennine Way is all heather-clad moorland and the cry of the curlew. These lands are rich with cultural and historical significance, shaped by centuries of human activity. Expect to see prehistoric monuments, Roman forts, and medieval packhorse routes. Take time to connect with the stories of those who have traversed these lands throughout history.

Completing the Pennine Way is both an amazing achievement and an unforgettable experience. Perhaps you are a seasoned long-distance walker looking to fulfil a long held ambition, or maybe a nature lover hoping to witness the ever-changing untamed beauty of the countryside? Whatever the reason, the Pennine Way is sure to leave an indelible mark on all those who venture along its path.

Our Holidays

In addition to offering the entire 265 mile Pennine Way from Edale to Kirk Yetholm as one epic adventure, we have divided the trail into three more manageable sections.

The first of these is the southern section from Edale in the Peak District to Horton in Ribblesdale in the Yorkshire Dales. On your journey you’ll experience Kinder Scout and Bleaklow, undoubtedly some of the finest walking in the Dark Peak. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit the charming village of Haworth, former home of the Brontë sisters, as well as explore the impressive Malham Cove. Depending on whether or not your chosen itinerary has you spending the evening in Haworth, this holiday will vary from 93 to 97 miles.

Next up is the 104 mile central section from Horton in Ribblesdale to Greenhead in Northumberland. Here you’ll experience the dramatic limestone moors of the southern Dales, visit High Force and Cauldron Snout waterfalls, marvel at High Cup Nick and scale Cross Fell, the highest point on the Pennines.

Finally we have the northern section from Greenhead to Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders. Over the 68 miles you’ll walk along the best preserved section of Hadrian’s Wall, enjoy mile upon mile of delightful forestry trails and make a challenging traverse of the magnificent Cheviot Hills.

Please bear in mind that the distances each day are trail distances only. They do not take into account walking to your accommodation. On some days the accommodation might be on or close to the trail but on other days you may need to walk one or two miles to get to your overnight stop. Where there are transfers you may have to wait to be transferred from the moors into the nearby town or village for the evening. There will be little or no shelter while you wait. It is crucial you carry appropriate clothing.

We offer 5 itineraries on the complete Pennine Way ranging from a challenging 16 days through to a more forgiving 22 days. When choosing your itinerary consider how far you’d like to walk each day, as well as whether your choice will have you stay in your preferred locations, for instance Haworth, former home of the Brontë sisters. Some may wish to visit God’s Bridge and follow the direct route over Cotherstone Moor in one demanding 21 mile day, while others will rely on the Bowes Loop to ease the daily distance.

Client Feedback

By my reckoning, there have been nine walking holidays so far.  Earlier this year I completed the latest one.  The Pennine Way in celebration of my 70th birthday.  On this, as with all my other walks, I found the arrangements to be faultless.  This is why I keep returning to Mickledore.  It means that I can start each walk with complete confidence that the only thing that could go wrong is me!  My thanks to all at Mickledore!

I have done many walks with Mickledore (West Highland Way, Great Glen Way, SW Coastal Path, Coast to Coast, Cotswolds Round, Thames Path) and I plan to do many more (Northumberland Coast next). All have been seamlessly organised with a high standard of accommodation, reliable luggage transfer and useful trail information. The staff are responsive and knowledgeable. I recommend them without hesitation. Five stars from me.

What made the holiday special, and so easy-going, was the meticulous organisation by Mickledore Travel, from the initial booking to the end of the trip. I know it is a cliché, but Mickledore really did exceed our expectations.
